I grew up on the Caribbean island chain of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). The islands’ earliest inhabitants named their home Yurumein, the history and details in a locale are what inspire much of my photography.
I think of SVG and its vibrant, undulating landscape every time I go out to make photography. The Caribbean first shaped my mind for creativity; I was bombarded in my youth with color and sounds, creating a sensory orchestra.
The same cultural richness I grew up with, I have found in my new home in Maine, USA. The people, their culture and the landscape offer a similar attraction to one’s creative senses initially developed in the Caribbean.
The creators who live in both my origin and adopted cultures also help to keep the photogenic juices flowing. From the beautifully crafted Carnival costumes parading the streets of Kingstown on Mardis Gras, to the carefully milled lobster boats littering the bays and harbors of Maine’s rocky coast; there are always handy artisan details to turn my lens on.
